Alhaji Bashir A. Adeniyi, MFR

Alhaji Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, has led the Nigeria Customs Service through a period of major revenue growth, enforcement reform, technology adoption and trade-facilitation initiatives.

Under his leadership, Customs recorded ₦6.1 trillion in revenue in 2024, exceeding its target by more than ₦1 trillion and representing a major year-on-year increase. The Service also strengthened enforcement against smuggling, prohibited goods, illicit drugs and other threats while maintaining its trade-facilitation mandate.

Adeniyi has championed technology and data-driven customs administration, including the use of digital clearance and advance-ruling systems to improve predictability and transparency for legitimate traders. His leadership has also emphasised stakeholder engagement and stronger collaboration with other security and economic agencies.

These reforms are significant because Customs sits at the intersection of national security, revenue generation and international trade. Improving its efficiency therefore has direct consequences for government finances, legitimate commerce and Nigeria’s competitiveness.

The Daily Times of Nigeria honours Alhaji Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, as Public Officer of the Year for measurable improvements in revenue mobilisation, enforcement, trade facilitation and the modernisation of Nigeria’s Customs administration.
