Senator Hope Uzodinma, CON
Governor, Imo State
Senator Hope Uzodimma, Executive Governor of Imo State, South-East Nigeria, and Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum, has distinguished himself through a development-driven leadership approach focused on infrastructure renewal, security, education, healthcare, social welfare and economic development.
At the helm of Imo State, Governor Uzodimma has pursued the 3R Initiative — Recovery, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction — as a framework for rebuilding critical infrastructure and restoring confidence in the state’s development trajectory. His administration has prioritised road construction and rehabilitation, public infrastructure, education and social interventions, including the provision of food palliatives aimed at supporting vulnerable residents and alleviating the impact of economic hardship.
His administration has also advanced efforts to revitalise the Egbema Power Plant, a major energy asset that had remained dormant for approximately 18 years, reflecting a broader commitment to strengthening the state’s infrastructure and productive capacity.
In the political sphere, as Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum, Senator Uzodimma has emerged as a prominent voice among governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, including governors who have subsequently joined the ruling party from other political platforms. In this capacity, he has played an active role in mobilising support for the policies and programmes of the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, while contributing to the advancement of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Perhaps one of the most striking expressions of his administration’s development vision is in the area of healthcare. The establishment of the Imo Robotics and Oncology Centre (IROC) at the Imo Specialist Hospital Complex, Umuguma, Owerri, represents a significant investment in the future of specialised medical care in the South-East.
The centre achieved a historic milestone with the successful completion of Imo State’s first robotic-assisted surgery, marking a new chapter in the region’s adoption of advanced medical technology. The procedure was performed by a team of Nigerian and international medical specialists led by renowned robotic surgeon Prof. Kingsley Ekwueme, demonstrating how strategic partnerships, specialist expertise and cutting-edge technology can combine to transform healthcare delivery.
Developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework, IROC brings sophisticated robotic-assisted surgical technology and oncology services closer to patients in Imo State and the wider South-East. Its establishment represents an ambition to expand access to precision medicine and advanced healthcare while reducing the need for patients to travel outside the region for highly specialised procedures.
Governor Uzodimma’s record therefore reflects an approach to governance that seeks to combine physical infrastructure with human development, social intervention with institutional reform, and public leadership with innovation and strategic partnership.
For his contributions to the development of Imo State, his leadership within the Progressives Governors Forum, and his championing of innovation and modern healthcare infrastructure in the South-East, The Daily Times of Nigeria honours Senator Hope Uzodimma as Outstanding Governor (South East).
