Alhaji Mohammed Umar Bago

Governor Mohammed Umar Bago has distinguished himself through an ambitious development agenda focused on agriculture, infrastructure, economic diversification, human capital and rural development. Since assuming office in 2023, his administration has pursued a deliberate strategy of repositioning Niger State as a major agricultural and agro-industrial hub, leveraging its vast arable land and water resources to drive food production, employment and investment.

Agriculture remains one of the defining pillars of his administration. His government has invested heavily in mechanisation, irrigation, improved inputs and large-scale cultivation, with the 2026 farming programme targeting more than 120,000 hectares, an estimated 500,000 metric tonnes of food production annually and over 3,000 direct and indirect jobs. The programme also extends across processing, packaging, storage, logistics and market access, creating opportunities for private-sector participation and youth and women-led enterprises.

His infrastructure programme has been equally ambitious, with major road projects undertaken across the state to connect rural communities with markets and facilitate agricultural and commercial activity. The administration has reported over 1,000 kilometres of road projects embarked upon across Niger State, including federal and state roads, while major projects such as the Minna-Bida dual carriageway are designed to improve movement, reduce travel time and stimulate economic activity.

Governor Bago has also invested in electricity, healthcare, education and rural development. His administration launched an initiative targeting the overhaul of 600 transformers, while more than 200 newly procured transformers were earmarked for distribution to communities. Its broader development programme includes primary healthcare infrastructure, tertiary education, rural roads and community development projects.

Through the combination of agricultural transformation, infrastructure renewal, investment attraction and human-capital development, Governor Bago has established a clear vision for a more productive and economically competitive Niger State.
